The method of producing titanium-steel clad plates is called the explosive cladding method, which has advantages, corrosion resistance, and disadvantages: high cost.

 

The main points of the explosive composite method: firstly, keep a certain distance between the two metal plates to be crimped, and then put an appropriate amount of explosives on them. It is detonated by one end of the explosive, and the explosion speed is thousands of meters per second. At the collision point, the substrate steel plate and the titanium plate show fluid behavior due to the very large deformation speed and ultra-high pressure. The oxide film and gas adsorption layer on the two metal surfaces are removed as a metal jet, and the clean surface The bonding is completed in an instant, which is called cold bonding.

 

This process, also known as the explosive clad method, produces titanium-steel clad plate that may be hot-rolled to a plate thickness of 4 mm.

 

Clad plate flaws and welding flaws are the two most frequent quality issues in the manufacture of titanium steel clad plates. The former is primarily caused by an inadequate bonding rate, localized surface cracks in the steel and titanium layers, etc.; the latter is mostly caused by pores, cracks, insufficient penetration, and slag inclusions.

So, what are the preventive measures for titanium steel composite plates?

 

Composite board defects

1. Adhere to the re-inspection system of incoming materials, and the combination status of compositeplates should be inspected one by one. For composite plates that do not consider the strength of titanium, the flaw detection requires continuous 100% ultrasonic flaw detection within a 50mm wide range around, and 200mm interval flaw detection for the rest of the area. The rest, 100% flaw detection.

2. When the composite board has poor plasticity, it should be re-annealed to eliminate stress, improve its performance, and prevent defects in subsequent manufacturing.

3. When it is necessary to bend the reel, stamping head and other involved plates, when the temperature is low, it is necessary to preheat the bending part with flame to prevent bubbling or cracks.

4. When planing holes and drilling pipe holes, the blanking and drilling operations should be processed from the titanium layer to the steel layer as much as possible to prevent the composite board from being torn or cracked.

 

Welding defects

The shielding gas for welding the titanium layer should be argon with a purity of no less than 99.99%. Moreover, interlayers and cracks are prohibited in welding wire.

2. The welding region of the workpiece should be meticulously cleaned and prepared before welding. When it is below 5°C outside, flames should be utilized to warm the base steel surface.

3. For titanium-steel composite plate equipment, the titanium weld seam is processed using strip technology, which involves removing the titanium layer that is within 15 mm of the composite plate's edge, welding the steel weld seam first, and then completely covering the steel weld seam with a 50 mm wide titanium lath for titanium layer welding under argon protection.

4. Before repairing welding, the microcracks on the composite board's surface must be cleaned up. Direct repair welding can be utilized for tiny cracks.

5. If a considerable region of non-bonding is discovered during production and inspection, the material will need to be replaced. If the problem is minor, corrective action can be done, and titanium rivets should be used to reinforce the non-bonding area. More rivets are used, which is better.
