Titanium and titanium alloys have high specific strength and good corrosion resistance and are widely used in aerospace, aviation, electric power, shipbuilding, seawater desalination, marine engineering, and other fields. However, due to its high price, it is usually used in the key parts of components in the form of titanium-steel composite plates, which can not only meet the special performance requirements of the product but also save costs. In order to obtain good compactness, welding is usually used to connect titanium and steel. However, due to the direct fusion welding of titanium and steel, a brittle and hard phase will be formed in the weld joint, which will significantly reduce the joint plasticity and make the weld brittle, resulting in weld cracks. At present, most countries in the world use explosive forming to manufacture titanium-steel composite panels.
When the titanium-steel clad plate is manufactured by the explosive welding method, the metallurgical bonding type between the two metal materials is different according to the different collision speeds and angles during the explosive welding, which can be roughly divided into three types:
(a) When the collision speed is lower than the critical speed, the joint surface is in a linear joint state, and no melting occurs on the straight joint surface, but the joint force is low. Unbonded defects are caused by small changes in crash conditions.
(b) When the collision velocity is higher than a critical value, a wave-like bond is formed. The mechanical properties of this bond are better than those of a straight bond, and the selection of welding parameters is wide.
(c) When the impact velocity and angle are too large, a continuous molten layer is formed. In the case of titanium-steel clad plates, this molten layer forms brittle intermetallic compounds that make the joints brittle and often contain numerous shrinkage cavities and other defects inside.
